Nation idea: bouncing ideas off each other.

Postby Shaun » Tue May 24, 2011 9:57 pm

So, maybe we could start talking about and forming our ideas.

My idea sketch:

Ukrainian language

Imperial, oligarchical structure.

Premise: Suffering of a general and indifferent nature. Everyone, including the privileged, are subject to emotional poverty.

Features:a citizen rating system that is generally secret. Once one falls below a certain, often subjective, rating, it's difficult to know the possible perils that await a failure in the eyes of the societal bureaucracy. This keeps everyone motivated. A similar system in rating foreign powers is more publicized and used to drive the miserable citizenry into a frenzy.

Suspicion is endemic.

So are drownings,and suicides.

Basically, the expansive, extended Imperial Family and their minions run everything, and jockey against each other for position and privilege.

Our archenemies are 17 and 28... It's like a sport.

Good idea Shaun, I'll follow suit.

Language: Irish Gaelic

Government Type: Theocracy Democratic Monarchy, complicated, but it'll clear up in time.

Name (Tentative): Tearmann – Sanctuary

Government structure: Emperor, Head of the Church, Parliament (with Synod). Despite having a parliament and a monarch the church is incredibly strong in the state and has a powerful influence on policy.

Climate and Biome: Pacific Northwest, Temperate Rainforest, Northwest Europe, Japan

Bird: Puffins (Homage to Newfoundland)

Core Idea: A historian speaking of Quebec once said that it was a church that birthed a state. This is a model I may follow.

History:

Nomad invasions, resistance led by a single priest. Inspires the mythology of divine protection of the state. Invasion leads to the destruction of the existing state apparatus and the creation of a vacuum. Vacuum is filled by the church. Political institutions that develop following the invasion are centred around the church and its 'pope'.

Following the Nomad invasion begins a period of social reordering with the church playing an increasing role in the lives of the citizens of a common territory. Late middle ages and early modern period will see the growth of the state in the acquisition of territories in the south and east. The final territorial gains will likely fall in the 19th century. At the same time is the growth of naval power and creation of a colonial empire in Ascesia, Lestria, and the Seranias.

Treatment of Natives would be highly suspect, especially in Lestria and Ascesia. Seranian colonization efforts would likely work well. Terrible persecutions. Racism may be extensive in terms of the hierarchy of ascended.

My idea for 17:

Name: Unified Zemayan and Austoyan States (Vieningas Žemaičių ir Aukštaičių Valstijos), Zemay and Austoy (Žemaitija ir Aukštaitija)

Government Type: Constitutional Monarchy with a powerful monarch

Language: Zemyan language (Lithuanian language), as the only official everyday language

The core ideology of Zemay is that the nation, as a whole, is one organic being, while different social classes within the society are organs of the nation, which should cooperate with each other to serve the nation. To reinforce the idea that the state is one solid body, the culture of Zemay has been artificially modified and constructed during the formation of the Unified States, and are enforced via means such as fatalist church and education. As a result, other subversive cultures and arts, as well as those of minorities within the nation (should they still exist as a cultural body) will be banned or at least being forced to modified to suit the nation's culture.

The Grand Council, which is the legislature of the country, is formed by representatives that are appointed, inherited, or in rare case, elected by different social groups, such as the fatalist church and the military. Smaller councils will be formed by cabinet ministers and relevant representatives, and are responsible to many nation-wide edicts such as regulation on culture and arts. The cabinet ministers are appointed by the sovereign of the country, who is the head of state of Zemay, and can disband the council should need arise.

27 is the biggest threats for now, and buffer states like 20 were established due to pass conflicts between them.

History:

Before the nomadic invasion, there was a semi-mythical First Zemayan Empire that ruled the gulf. While it probably exist, no archaeological founding can determine its exact nature, as well as its territory. The First Empire was destroyed by the nomadic horde, which is later reinterpreted by fatalists as punishment. After the fall of the nomadic empire, the Zemayan states stayed as small city states until Mindaugas the Fearsome united them and established the Second Zemayan Empire. However, the Second Empire itself is more like a loose confederation with questionable control over most of the territories, and fell apart once Mindaugas was dead (probably during a battle against 27).

It was until Kęumautas the Great lead his fatalist state and united the states once again. Knowing the multitude of rulership and culture is the reason why the Second Empire fell, he remodeled fatalism and traditional Zemayan collectivism to construct a new "national culture", and enforce it on his territories.

47

Language: At least two *Germanic languages

Confederation born out of two or three SPs and a bunch of minor little countries nobody cares about joining together to make money and not have their collective asses kicked by a "bigger fish". On a national level, the government seems rather progressive compared to some of it's neighbors; unicameral assembly, premier as the head of state, political parties and all that jazz. However it doesn't take too long to realize the member states are a hodgepodge of various kinds of governments. Expect to see kings, preisdents, prime ministers, dukes, princes, councilmen and that sad little theocratic autocrat sitting alone in the corner, all within the same (national) borders.

Premise: Cool, calm, collected on the outside; a nervous wreck on the inside.

Features: Several nations for the price of one, now with limited edition leather interiors!

Other notes:
48 is either a member that seceded or is likely to be their next member (with some "strong suggesting", if they're still not interested).
Colonies are managed by member states and not by the Confederate government.
Perpetual tug of war between "federals" and "confederals" in the Assembly.
Shouting terrible blasphemies towards the Prophet and reciting heretical formulae.

A quick sketch:
Nation ID: 5
Name: none yet
Language: tbd, maybe Estonian
Form of Government: Empire, constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system

Overview: once an absolute monarchy, this country is now a classical night watchman state. The economy is booming but wealth is very unevenly distributed (think South Africa or China, but a bit richer). Politics is viewed as the persuit of rich and/or noble people and policians are universally reviled by nearly everyone. There are three main parties let's provisonally call them Liberty Party (strongly pro business), People's Party (also pro business, claims to represent the middle classes) and the slightly smaller Worker's Party (claims to be left-wing but is mainly associated by the populace with organised crime). The Emperor is incredibly rich (and does not pay taxes), but the state run media conceal this and mainly portray him and his family as great philantropists. He is the head of the Fatalist church in the country and is viewed as a living God by most people, and as an impartial force above day to day 'dirty' politics. Militarism and nationalism are emphasised, though love for the nation does usually not extend to disadvanted members of society. This is justified with fatalism and reaching a higher plane of morality. A nation of proud seafarers, the country joined the colonial race early and has holdings in the Seranias and a small Hong Kong like city state in SW Ereana (you will find it on the map). Laws in the colonies are even laxer than at home, leading to even more blatant exploitation (this, also, is justified by fatalism). The dominant ethnic group in the country (name tbd) views itself as inherently ethnically superior. Ethnic minorities mainly exist on the islands to the south and east of the 'mainland'. They are institutionally disadvantaged and constitute a disproportionate number of the country's settlers in the Seranias.

COUNTRY 28
Name: Ixchel
Philosophies: Combination of American Indian and Appalachian Superstition plus Friere and Chomsky, maybe even Fish. Mix glass half full with Deconstructionism.
Religion: Animism + a crumbling Russion Orthodox.

Recent past: In efforts to be good to the environment, everything was torn down and dismantled 10 years ago and replaced with all green structures, which made part of my country nothing but a huge wasteland where vagabonds live.

The rest of the country is "really nice" and hip, and likes to complain about the bad stuff that goes on in 27.

There is a big divide between traditionalists and modernists. Modernists feel that people should cover their faces when they go out in public so that ugly people are not treated unfairly, and for reasons of modesty, especially for the beautiful. It is almost considered a curse by the modernists to be beautiful.

The facial coverings used by modernists are called khovatysya rechi.

The most popular ones are styled after circus animals, but some but some subcultures have different preferences. People don't generally start covering their faces until after their rosty vhorus, or grow-up parties.

One of the big political controversies is allowing refugees from 27 to float their homemade rafts into certain parts of Ixchel. 27 does not admit to refugees wanting to leave 27. But we know better.

There are no prisons in Ixchel. The vagabond wasteland, called "dekadent·sʹkyy̆" There's rumors of cannibalization over there. Sometimes, refugees from 27 end up there, but nobody knows how. Her Highness says, "Out of sight, out of mind. Plus that's how we get away with having no prisons. If you do bad stuff, you get sent there. There's a wall. And the cool thing is, it's over on that other side of the water from the main part of our country, so if they get out, it's still not our problem b/c they're getting out on someone else's country."

#1
Nation Name: (Provisionally -) The Great and Universal Terophatic Empire (Tyirfatskoe Vladykastvo Vel i Mirskoe) - Terophan (Tyirfats Ⱅⱛⱃⱇⰰⱌ)
Language: Official - Old Church Slavonic; Spoken - (modified) Hebrew, some Finno-Ugric language
Form of government: Totalitarian (of course) imperial autocracy

Terophan is a state which relies on a perceived tradition which dates back to the nomadic empires. Harbouring the self-proclaimed rump state of one of these dynasties which was expelled from the central steppes and forced to set up its capital in the south-east, Terophan was, in the late medieval period, part of a larger superstate along with #14. The Emperor of Terophan, a charismatic leader at the time, was "restored" with great pomp when this state crumbled, and attained a vast quantity of power. In modern Terophan, a vast bureaucratic machinery, a revitalized and reshaped Fatalist church, and an extensive military-industrial complex prop up the dominating imperial government, which with the evolution of media technology has attained a degree of totalitarian power. The Emperor of Terophan, simultaneously Standard-Bearer of the Terophatic Fatalist Banner, is venerated almost as a deity, and his word, transmitted through this state apparatus, is absolute, though depending on his abilities this may be little more than what his advisers tell him to say. Terophan views itself in an imagined tradition as the rightful restoration of an ancient, world-spanning empire. In reality its policies aim to be revolutionary - in discourse it is seen as bringing back a forgotten golden age.

The imperial house is descended from the pale nomads to the north, but most people in Terophan both look different and speak a separate language - their identity is maintained through political-religious indoctrination.
Straight from the cheese refinery.

I forgot my government type: It will be a benevolent dictatorship. However, the queen will be unaware that there is a growing faction against her. It is her greatest fear that someone will find out that she is a bit of a traditionalist at heart.

A bit more about the background behind some of the ideas that may be seem to be a bit impractical on the surface:

1. The animal masks are central to the modernist culture in Ixchel because of a prince/royal family member who historically, as a child, had horrible facial scarring when his mother forgot to put him in his standing stool before taking a nap. He fell into some hot coals and burned his face and ruined an eye. Incidentally, this provoked the invention of the glass eye in Ixchel, but more importantly started a cultural phenomenon. Because of his ugliness, (he was formerly considered the most beautiful child ever born in Ixchel), he started wearing masks. He would find the most fantastical and beautiful masks everywhere he went, and people began to make masks for him. Because of his popularity, children and then adults everywhere started wearing masks, too, in support of him. Many children did this to hide their own beauty, as they never thought of themselves as beautiful as him. This deep sense of modesty about beauty became prevalent throughout the modern era and defined an entire generation of Ixchelles. In turn, this generation influenced the next century. Now all but the traditionalists, whose families were royal rivals or old money families mostly, wear animal masks in public to cover their beauty.

2. The wasteland gives fodder for 27 to criticize Ixchel. Because of the dichotomous nature of our criticism of 27's miserable treatment of its citizens, they need something to stab at. It's the white elephant.

The ruler of Ixchel is the Koroleva (or queen) Sofiyko Yaryna Cheburka (Mia Wasikowska). She is 23 years old. Her parents were frozen to death on one of their adventures north, which was a national tragedy. Her hobbies include correspondence, society parties, charities, dating (primarily a man named Oleksandr, with whom she repeatedly appears in the tabloids but who remains otherwise a mystery). She has a collection of rabbits (alive, mounted, and souvenir/keepsake/knick-knack) and she thinks of herself as something of an author/poet. She always has a "project." She likes to travel and make appearances. This often gets her into trouble, because she has a habit of making unannounced stops at ordinary places that are not prepared for her visits.

She reads all of her fanmail herself. She takes pride in writing back to little kids who wear animal masks.
She takes herself very seriously.

Some random ideas for the culture of 17 :P

The Unified States is a highly monocultural country, which is strictly enforced upon its inhabitants by the government under the ideology of Vieningumas ("Unaminity"). The idea behind Vieningumas is that the national culture is the core of the country, and a complete cooperation between all social classes having a common goal for the betterment of the nationhood is the only way the nation can become stable and prosperous.

The national culture of the Unified States (Zemayan language: Valstybinis Kultūra) is a fusion of traditional Zemayan culture and the foreign fatalist beliefs, which is created by Kęumatus the Great, the first sovereign of the Unified States in order to strengthen the foundation of the newfound country compositing of different cultures. In order to enforce the newly-constructed culture, all education faculties became under the control of the country and the fatalist banner, and all languages except Standard Zemayan were banned. People of other cultures were encouraged to adopt Zemayan names and learn to speak Zemayan language, while those refused to follow suit were prosecuted, exiled or executed. Later, other media such as arts and dramas are also regulated under the same principle.

The national culture encourage several nuclear families forming communities around the fatalist banner. Men and women are encouraged to work together to fulfill roles of both the banner and the community based on their ability, as well as their gender. Children are either sent to schools run by the state, or being homeschooled by the banner. In either case, they will be taught the national culture, as well as the concept beind it, both in the social and religious context.

In the Zemayan branch of fatalism, it is believed that while people can achieve transcendence through the power of free will, an individual is extremely weak-minded against light and darkness, and only by cooperating wholeheartedly can men utilise their power to overcome both sides. While individual free will can be practised, it must not overrule the will of the majority or risk undermining the whole endeavour.

In the national culture, the entire culture of the Unified States is believed to be not unlike a single organic entity like human, and has to eat and expand to survive. In order to achieve this, the country has to constantly converting other culture into one of the national culture ("to eat"). When the nation is strengthened by Vieningumas, or other nations show weakness and decline in power, the nation should take the chance and incorporate them though both military and cultural means, and convert their original culture into one of the Unified States. As a result, the national culture of the Unified States is sometimes considered militaristic.

27 - (cont.)

Name: Zeborizheye, often "The Saypor" when referred to in the west.

A nation resistant to change, while finding itself ever more in flux, The Sapor struggles with the coexistence of modernity and a deep culture that has shifted little in five hundred years.

All power is taken to exist in and derive from the person of the emperor (Vozhd), who rules as the head of an imperial oligarchy of associates (mostly relatives of some degree or other [everyone knows who everyone else is, genealogically. And there is fierce competition to demonstrate noble and royal blood at even 500 years past], or ambitious bureaucrats hoping for an in into the life of power and luxury.)

The vast majority hold no hope of this, and struggle to remain grounded in a world where they feel there is little to do to make things better. There is, however, a movement within the small middle-classed, forward thinking elements within the country that depend on outside support in their attempts to change The Saypor for the betterment and dignity of all.

The nation is most densely populated in the southern regions, with moderate densities in the eastern peninsular region. The northern coastal areas find some limited development of modern infrastructures. The interior is sparse; small settlements and the occasional provincial town connected mostly by dirt roads and rail lines for resource extraction.
It's like a train wreck.
Wait, no... it is a train wreck.

Government of 17

Executive

The head of the executive branch of Zemay is the sovereign (Valdovas) of the Unified States. During the reign of Kęstautas the Great, former sovereigns and princes of numerous member states were abolished, and the sovereign of the Unified States became the ultimate leader of all Zemayan and Austoyan states. Sovereign can appoint anyone as posts within the cabinet as one sees fit, as well as creating and abolishing ministers within the cabinet. Ministers in the cabinet are required to form councils with members of the Grand Council to initiate new proposals and edicts to the Grand Council.

The Sovereign

The sovereign (Zemayan language: Valdovas) is the head of state of the Unified States. While most sovereign rules for his/her entire life, there are no default line of succession for the throne. Instead, the ruling sovereign, sometimes with adivces from the cabinet or the banner, often hand-picks the potential successors when one sees fit. Afterwards, the potential successors will be trained for both the art of rulling, as well as doctrines of the fatalist beliefs and Vieningumas. It usually takes years, even decades for the banner and the special council to recognise them as legitimate successor. After the current sovereign passed away or abdicated, the chosen successor will automatically become the new sovereign. In case the sovereign died without recognised successor, the special council, which is formed mostly by nobles and fatalist banner, will form the regency council and aid the rule of the new sovereign. Usually the new sovereign will be recognised in a few years after that, but cases of forced abdication is not unheard of.

Legislative

The legislature of Zemay is the Grand Council of the Unified States. Members of the council are generated by different predifined social classes, such as nobles and generals. The method of generation differs from class to class, but most of them are either appointed or inherited. The percentage of members from each social class, as well as the defination of them are subjected to modification respective councils. Members of the Grand Council serves a term for 5 years, but there are no regulation on the limit of terms or years of council members, and it is not uncommon for some to serve as a member for decades. However, the sovereign has the rights to disband the legislature, which will then regenerate new members of the council by the predifined methods.

Main social classes of the Unified States:

Nobles - Traditional leaders of different states within the US. While these titles are more or less inherited, it is required to be indoctrinated and recognised in other to keep the titles. Sometimes, commoners can also join the rank by these methods, but the number is small, and at least some influence, money and influence is required.
Military - High-ranking members of the military.
Banner - High-ranking members of the fatalist banner. While technically this class includes all the religious groups, the Zemayan brand of fatalism is the main religion, and only a few other sects are allowed in small numbers.
Academics - Professors, doctors and other learnt people. It also includes other careers that are generally academic and/or need to be well-learnt, like lawyers, judges and engineers.
Merchants - Representatives of merchants, capitalists and industrialists. Those of labour organisations might also be in here, but insignificant to other groups.
Peasants - Representatives of rural communities. They are supposed to represent people that are not covered in the above groups.

Azophin
Nation Name: The Sublime Empire of Azophin (Atsefinskoe Vladykastvo Božĭi
Language: Officially, Old Church Slavonic - in a very reduced official context. The colloquial lingua franca, and the language of most government, is Aramaic. Various Semitic dialects are spoken across the south of the country, with Russian, a few (peripheral) Caucasian languages and some Baltic spoken elsewhere in the country.

Azophin, like its neighbour Terophan, descends from a sizable southeastern empire which emerged from the rubble of the old nomad empire. In the 15th century, a long-lasting succession war ultimately split the nation in two. In Terophan, the monarch managed to engineer a restoration, bringing to an end the slow decline of the previous centuries - in Azophin, however, with a boy-king on the throne, the succession war was effectively a killing blow to the emperor's temporal power. The regency council, made up of the most powerful military leaders of the empire, established itself as a national institution, and ruled the nation on behalf of the emperor even when he came of age.

Progressively, however, the council was sidelined in favour of specific nobles' individual power, which they used to circumvent the council and ultimately reduce it to little more than a forum in which, if they so decided, major lords could settle disputes. Several families held short, but important hegemonies, but no long-lasting dynasties emerged. Despite the tension - or indeed because of it - Azophin prospered, its borders growing exponentially and ultimately allowing it to stretch from sea to shining sea, with individual nobles leading military expeditions to increase their personal prestige and holdings. This continued until the 1800s, when the situation became more and more difficult, with increasing deadlock between major families and a general levelling of the playing field with regards to their resources. The arms race in the build up to the Long War was seized upon as a patriotic device by which to settle disputes and also as an excuse to establish a centralised national army in lieu of the private ones held by nobles - an army which the ruling family of the time believed would be able to weaken the power of the other major nobles by supplanting their military force.

The Long War was, however, a disaster for Azophin. The undisciplined troops of many of the nobles' households frequently routed or withdrew from the field against central orders, and this created an intense bitterness against the warlords. The peace agreement - which forced Azophin to cede large sections of territory - was humiliating and, furthermore, destroyed any vestige of central government. The country teetered on the edge of effective collapse, and for several years formal secession by many of the warlords seemed imminent. However, popular feeling was turning against them - and the intense patriotism generated by a generation of wartime propaganda and excited by the demagoguery of growing restorationist movements was ultimately the downfall of warlordism. The charismatic leader of the army, backed by local militias, seized control and purged the warlords in a civil war lasting for 4 years. Backed by capitalist interests and gaining legitimacy from the Emperor, the military took advantage of populist feeling to gain legitimacy from the Emperor, and the modern military dictatorship was born.

Guys,
I am having writers block at the moment and haveing difficulty in thinking up some ideas for my nation.
I have decided that I just want a minor nation, maybe an ex colony or even a buffer state. Some things I have come up with so far ... well two anyway:

1] A small impoverished nation ruled by a tinpot dictator who holds power only because his tribe holds a strategically important commodity (oil, natural gas, uranium, rare earth minerals ……)

2] An ex colony of a major nation governed by that nations former political/religious trouble makers. They could have been exiled during the Great War so they would not cause an inconvenience or even fled there after a failed coup or such. Maybe because of economic hardship caused by the war, instead of dealing with the problem in the colony, this nation chose to cut the colony free hoping it would fail.
The former colony is now governed as an Oligarchy with the outcasts holding the power of Government. Think Rhodesia or Apartheid era South Africa.

Will any of these ideas fit into the new world ?

My two cents; for the first, to me the best options look like being #39 and particularly #40. Possibly also #11 (currently Seter), but that could well have been a bit of a plaything for Azophin and Terophan, to judge from its position.

For the second, given what's been discussed so far, my guess is that wouldn't fit on the main landmass of Ereana and may have to go into Ascesia or Lestria. Although we haven't gone into those areas in detail at this point...
